Classical Education:
In the early 90’s I studied at the University of North Texas studying Psychology, Art, Design and Biology. My true love was figuring out how people thought and how they perceived reality. I truly enjoyed cognitive reasoning and spatial reasoning because it gave definitive answers into the thought process of a person.
Many designers do not fully understand that there are only so many bits of information that a person can digest and what happens if you overload this process. There are also models as to how information is grouped and stored. What causes things to be stored in long-term memory and how they are recalled. This has caused me to be a truly unique designer and actually love what I do on a deeper level. Yes I am one of those people who loves the question why much more then how, because when you know why the how will be more effective.
Dot.com Boom:
I was around during the dot.com boom but it was not my fault. I generally did freelance projects but the biggest things I learned from this time is that user base does not equal profitability. Many newer designers are falling into the same traps that as old guys learned already. Quality is much more important then quantity and have a plan. You need to know your audience and target it effectively.
Self-taught:
I am self-taught in many of the applications used to create what we consider design work today. I did do the pen and ink canvas style design back in the day that was both tedious and time consuming. I quickly fell in love with Photoshop in 1997 could only scratch my head at the other designers who turned there noses up at technology. Having used many of these tools since their conception has allowed me to learn along with the software developers.
Also being self-taught has taught me one skill that can not be learned in institutions and that is how to teach yourself. With technology advancing exponentially it is important to be able to grasp new concepts quickly and this is the process of self-education.
Ethics:
Having a background psychology I have developed a strong ethical foundation to what it is I do. Design, Marketing, Advertising is in a way a form of manipulation and I only wish to impact people to improve their lives. This just so happens to be the best form of marketing and branding because it is something that people desperately need to see in today’s marketing. Integrity… With that said… spammers, scammers and hacks need not apply.
Value:
This is what we are here for. I may not be the cheapest solution on the block but I am highly effective. The best analogy I can give you is that you can buy a car for $2000 that gets 3 miles to the gallon or one for twice that that gets 1000 miles to the gallon. With many companies looking for the cheapest immediate solution that often find themselves coming to someone like me to fix everything that was done wrong.
That’s just not good business. Get it done right the first time!
